Although Maša Haľamová’s poetic work is not extensive – consisting mainly of three collections: Dar (1928), The Red Poppy (1932), and I Live Your Death (1966) – her poetry is remarkably rich in plant symbolism. Natural imagery appears frequently throughout her verses, taking on many forms – from mountain and meadow flora to field and garden flowers, mosses, shrubs, trees, branches, and even wooden crosses. This botanical world forms a coherent symbolic landscape, serving as a metaphorical reflection of her inner life – her emotions, spirituality, and perceptions of life and death. For Haľamová, the language of nature is as innate as her native language, and it is through this spontaneous connection that she is able to express her thoughts with grace and ease. Her poetry offers the reader a profound sense of calm and quiet joy.
